Survey (step-by-step) 7 I.T.
How to write a survey.
Notes:
1. Decide what information you want to gather from the survey.
Eg. You want to spend 10,000 and you want to know if students/staff at the school would be interested
in HOW you want to spend the money.
2. Keep the survey as short as possible, asking only those questions that will provide the information you need.
Eg. Don’t ask about garbage when you want to know about people’s opinions on gym equipment.
I My blog is: http://classofmissreinsalu.blogspot.com To get onto tel at home go to: http:// tel.tdsb.on.ca Note: You should be working on this over the next three days.
You want to be able to tally the answers AND then graph your results later.
Closed questions can be:
A ratings scale like:
Example (circle one) We need more gym equipment at school.
Strongly agree agree neutral/no opinion disagree strongly disagree
Are better than…
strongly agree strongly disagree
(You want to get and compile information that is easier to graph later.)
Another type of closed question can be a simple.
e.g.
We need more gym equipment.
Yes No Maybe
Or give choices
If we bought new equipment, we should spend it on.
a) balls (soccer, volleyball) b) jerseys c) lacrosse d)other
If other, what ideas do you have? (Please list a few.)
* Note this is an open question but good for providing evidence when
you do your presentation later. "Some people thought we should get
more equipment for things such as: ....)
When you get back your surveys, you tally the results and graph them.
The graphs will help give proof to why YOUR ideas are best.
-
Decide on your area to spend the money.
-
Think of questions to ask on your survey.
-
Design a survey (individual)
-
Meet with your group to share your surveys.
-
Decide on what part(s) will go on your ONE group survey.
-
Do a good copy of the survey, save it and e-mail it to Miss Reinsalu.
(Use your tel: valia.reinsalu@tel.tdsb.on.ca)
Please also e-mail me if you have questions.

This is for grade 7 I.T. classes only...please see next post (and previous post for links and work)
Congratulations, Milne Valley is $10,000 richer!
How would YOU improve the school?
If YOU had $10,000 to improve the school, what would you do?
Which group, subject and/or area would you devote your newly found funds to? How would you make that decision? How could you decide?
You and your group have been assigned to fact-find and then create a presentation that will convince student council, Ms. Bell and Ms. Cooper where the $10,000 should go.
You have been given one time funding only. So you should spend as much money close to $10,000 (including tax), or you will lose the remaining funds.
Some ideas could be: Green team (environmental improvements), Extracurricular (additional resources, sports equipment, etc.), Educational (guest speakers, trips), Equipment (computer, white boards, instruments, art supplies and/or other items to be purchased for school use).
Use on-line internet catalogues / databases, surveying the student population and other resources to help you research. Be realistic. Consult the TDSB web site to make sure your plan would be allowed in a school.
Guiding question: How can I best present information / data in a meaningful way using Excel?
Area of interaction: Approaches to learning.
After completing this assignment you will:
- further developing problem solving and decision making skills
- use spreadsheet program functions in order to communicate information
- fine tune group organizational skills
- learn how to keep a process journal
- use communication software to work with others
Area of Interaction: Community and Service: How best can I make a difference in my local school community?
Curriculum ties: Mathematics (data management - graphing) (numeration - calculation spreadsheet)
Visual Arts - developing visual presentation (graphs and data)
Language Arts - oral and visual communication (using visual presentation to communicate information, communication software - design process journal posts, oral group presentation of findings)
-------------------------------------------
Your final presentation should include:
Your proposal (explanation of what your group thinks the money should be spent on and why (use evidence from survey and your graph to back up your opinions)
A sample of your survey (of school needs / wants) printed out
One graph (best showing the needs of the school based on student survey or other information to back up your plan eg. If you decide to buy new t.v., a graph to compare ) printed out
One spreadsheet (itemized with taxes) of your spending plan
Implementation plan (a timeline of where and how the school will use the $10,000)
- Nine group process journal entries, three individual process journal entries using TEL communication software
During your presentation, you and your group will keep a “design process journal.” You will post a message to your class conference three times a week to discuss: what you did, what you changed, what you decided to change/why and other information to keep on track.
My group members are: __________________________________
Date assigned: ______________________ Date due: ________________________
Group Name : __________________________
Using spreadsheet calculations, show your invoicing (eg. How you spend your 10,000 including taxes for each item)
Survey your student population where should the money be spent? if you’ve decided on what to use the money for which item(s) should you choose? Eg. Sports equipment, what kind?
---------------------------------------------
TO HELP YOU STAY ON TRACK, YOU MAY WANT TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS
INVESTIGATE
Identify appropriate categories of information that can be represented using Excel.(Think: What can I put on a spreadsheet and do calculations?)
Find appropriate factual information. (Go to the internet, find other data sources and collect your own data using a survey. If you need help distributing your survey, see me (Miss Reinsalu) for assistance.)
Find out the appropriate type of charts to be used to represent the data you collected in a meaningful fashion. (charts eg. Graphs: remember when to use bar graphs, pie graphs, scatter plot and line graphs)
PLAN
Excel worksheet and graph
4. A) Outline some ideas for the different layout of your data in the table (tabular) form. Have at least one per group member.
Choose one table (or ideas from each table) to make your final presentation chart. Post one design process post to explain why you chose the table format that you did.
4. B) Outline some ideas about how your graph will look (at least one per group member).
Choose one graph (or ideas from each graph) for your final presentation. Post one design process post to explain why you chose the graph format that you did.
5. Prepare a one-minute presentation which will outline why you chose to collect the data that you did. What is the usefulness of the data presented in the chart and in graphical as well as in the tabular (t-chart) form as well.
CREATE
6. Create Excel worksheet which will contain the survey data both as a chart (on the spreadsheet) and as a graph. (This is your group's good copy. Remember that I am
marking all steps in the process though.)
7. Indicate on the bottom of your Excel worksheet your name, your class and
the date created. Save your document in your shared folder.
EVALUATE
8. Each group member must do a self assessment. How did you work as part of the team?
How were you able to collaborate eg. sometimes work at consensus to agree on a particular action and/or idea. Each student should post an entry to your process journal.

The Design Process
(adapted from http://www.bergen.org/technology/despro.html (for more details go to the web site)
The design process is used in manufacturing. Usually a need is identified and the inventor/designer meets the need. Once the prototype is approved, the design is manufactured (built as per specifications).
THE PROBLEM – also think of as a “need” remember the Greatest Canadian Invention? What need did each of the inventors try to fill?
THE DESIGN BRIEF- think of it as the “solution” or meeting the need
PROBLEM: Blind people cannot play many of the indoor games available to sighted people.
· DESIGN BRIEF: Design a game of dominoes that can be played by blind people.
· PROBLEM: The handle of a pot becomes too hot to hold when the pot is heated.
· DESIGN BRIEF: Design a handle that remains cool when the pot is heated.
INVESTIGATION
FUNCTION: A functional object must solve the problem described previously. The basic question to ask is “How will I use this?”
APPEARANCE: How will the object look? The shape, color, and texture should make the object attractive.
MATERIALS: What materials are available to you? You should think about the cost of these materials. Are they affordable? Do they have the right physical properties, such as strength, rigidity, color, and durability?
CONSTRUCTION: Will it be hard to make? Consider what methods you will need to cut, shape, form, join, and finish the material.
SAFETY: The object you design must be safe to use. It should not cause accidents.
DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
CHOOSING A SOLUTION
MODELS AND PROTOTYPES
TESTING AND EVALUATING
(Does it work? Does it meet the design brief? Will modifications improve the solution?)
MANUFACTURING
production of item. “The company is satisfied with the design. It knows that it is marketable (will sell). It must decide how many to make. Products may be mass-produced in low volume or high volume. Specialized medical equipment is produced in hundreds. Othe products, for example nuts and bolts, are produced in large volume. Millions may be made.
The task of making the product is divided into jobs. Each worker trains to do one job. As workers complete their special jobs, the product takes shape. Mass production saves time. Since workers train to do a particular job, each becomes skilled in that job. Also, automatic equipment does such things as:
· Cut and shape materials
· Weld parts together
· Spray on final finishes
Think of “How do they make that?” videos.
The process must be recorded checked and rechecked so that the manufacturing is reproducible.
Draw a diagram to help you remember the Design process.
(use arrows or lines to show the process)

(Note: there are six main steps in the note.
MYP outlines five key ideas...............
investigate
design
plan
create
evaluate.
(Use both notes to help you define what the five MYP steps are.)

Choose an object that can be manufactured (You may use a real object OR create a new one. Please check and get Miss Reinsalu to approve.)
My object is ____________________________________________________________ .
I chose this object because __________________________________________________
4. Research some of the history of the invention and development of the object.
From what you learn, create a power point presentation that would teach a class about the five main steps of the Design Process.
Refer to the rubric to see how your project will be marked. (Minimum 6 pages.)

An example.......
Investigate
Step 1: Problem: (the need / want to be filled)
eg. A pot's handle gets hot when cooked.)
Describe the problem as clearly as you can.
Design
Step 2: Design Brief (how you hope / intend to solve the problem)
eg. Create a handle that will NOT get hot when cooked (without having to wear something extra on your hand).
Describe the solution that you want.
Plan
Step 3: Research (what is available, what can you use, find, invent to solve the problem. What is possible?)
eg. Scientists work on many different kinds of materials in research. Or There are some other cooking utensils that use a particular substance that won't get hot using regular cooking temperatures.
Create
Step 4: Think of alternate solutions / pick the “best” one
(Out of all the possibilities, which solution is the most effective? Works the best? Is the cheapest? Damages the environment and animals left? Uses current technology versus one yet to be invented or developed? Pros and cons.
eg. One company has the patent on material X so we will use material Y. It's a bit more expensive but the company producing Y is willing to produce the material for us quickly and uses solar power.
Evaluate
Step 5. Create prototype/model and test out
Try your choice out in real life and laboratory situations.
eg. Try out the pot in a variety of situations. Test it in a lab, at homes and even restaurant settings. Collect information from users about how the pot looks, cooks and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) does the handle stay cool?
Finally, manufacture and/or start process again.
eg. Material Y DOES not get hot under normal conditions, but laboratory testing shows that after five uses, the handle falls off. Start again (or maybe find a better way to attach the handle!)
If everything is okay and the prototype is appropriate have a manufacture run. If you still need to work out some details, start again. Fine tune your model, research some more, create another model/prototype and retest again.

· one graphic
Your graphic should fill the entire 8 x 11 “ page.
You will be marked on spelling, word use, and design.
Create a folder in your home H: drive labeled IT projects.
Save your file using your initials and acrostic e.g. Bart Simpson (bsacrostic.doc).
Before you start think about:
How will I make sure that my word use and spelling is accurate?
How will I find appropriate words for every letter of your first and last name?
How can I make an acrostic poem about me eye-catching and interesting to look at?
