An advanced lesson:
conditional probability
eg.
The probability that it is Friday and that a student is absent is 0.03.

Since there are 5 school days in a week, the probability that it is Friday is 1/5 (or 0.2).

What is the probability that a student is absent given that today is Friday?

Solution: The probability that a student is absent since today is Friday is.

P (absent + Friday) = 0.03
_______ ----
P (Friday) 0.2

= 0.15 or 15 %

Measurement and conversion notes:

All three measures are interrelated:

Capacity (liquid) mL and L

Mass (usually solid) g and kg

Volume (can be many states cm3 and m3)

1 mL = 1 g = 1cm3

What do you measure using mL? g? cm3?

How can you manipulate a number according to its units.

Create a chart starting with the smallest unit that we study: mm and show the powers of 10 up until km.

How does the decimal move?

Metres is the standard unit for length.

Show the same prefixes for capacity Litre is the standard unit and also use mass (gram is the standard unit). All use the same prefixes.

Multiplying by powers of 10.
remember any number (before a decimal) is a whole number.
after the decimal (right) are parts of a whole.
123	x 1000	123,000	move the decimal 3 to the right
123	x 100	12,300	move the decimal 2 to the right
123	x 10	1230	move the decimal 1 to the right
123	x1	123	do not move the decimal
(like saying I'm making x groups of 123. The answer is bigger or the same as 123.)
123	x 0.1	12.3	move the decimal 1 to the left
123	x0.01	1.23	move the decimal 2 to the left
123	x0.001	0.123	move the decimal 3 to the left
(like saying needs to make 123 into x number of groups)
123 x 0.1 make 123 into groups of 10 (x by 1/10 or one tenth)
Every whole number has a decimal to the right of it.
