Design process power point assignment 7 I.T.

1. Read over the note about the steps to the design process
eg. Steps that are taken from an idea to an actually manufactured product.

2. Make a sketch (first with a pencil in the box below, then use the word drawing tool bar) to isolate the steps of the “Design Process.”
(Note: there are six main steps in the note.
MYP outlines five key ideas...............
· investigate
· design
· plan
· create
· evaluate.
(Use both notes to help you define what the five MYP steps are.)
3. Choose an object that can be manufactured (You may use a real object OR create a new one. Please check and get Miss Reinsalu to approve.)

Research some of the history of the invention and development of the object.
From what you learn, create a power point presentation that would teach a class about the five main steps of the Design Process.
An example.......
Investigate
Step 1: Problem: (the need / want to be filled)
eg. A pot's handle gets hot when cooked.)
Describe the problem as clearly as you can.
Design
Step 2: Design Brief (how you hope / intend to solve the problem)
eg. Create a handle that will NOT get hot when cooked (without having to wear something extra on your hand).
Describe the solutions that you want. There can be an infinite number of solutions to your problem.
Plan
Step 3: Research (what is available, what can you use, find, invent to solve the problem. What is possible?)
This stage you make a plan for many alternatives (try a minimum of three eg. Three different pot handles same idea, different specifications.)
eg. Scientists work on many different kinds of materials in research. Or There are some other cooking utensils that use a particular substance that won't get hot using regular cooking temperatures.
Create
Step 4: Plan you have thought of alternate solutions.
In create you now pick the “best” one.
You need to provide exact measurements (length, width, height, mass etc.) and exact material. You may create a model or prototype.
(Out of all the possibilities, which solution is the most effective? Works the best? Is the cheapest? Damages the environment and animals left? Uses current technology versus one yet to be invented or developed? Pros and cons.
eg. One company has the patent on material X so we will use material Y. It's a bit more expensive but the company producing Y is willing to produce the material for us quickly and uses solar power.
Evaluate
Step 5. Create prototype/model and test out
Try your choice out in real life and laboratory situations.
eg. Try out the pot in a variety of situations. Test it in a lab, at homes and even restaurant settings. Collect information from users about how the pot looks, cooks and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) does the handle stay cool?
Finally, manufacture and/or start process again.
eg. Material Y DOES not get hot under normal conditions, but laboratory testing shows that after five uses, the handle falls off. Start again (or maybe find a better way to attach the handle!)
If everything is okay and the prototype is appropriate have a manufacture run. If you still need to work out some details, start again. Fine tune your model, research some more, create another model/prototype and retest again.

Acrostic IT assignment (7A, 7C, 7E and 7G)
Guiding question: What skills do I need in order to accurately complete an assignment on time?
At the end of this activity, students will:
explore using Microsoft Word and its drawing tools
use proper naming of files and save in two different places on the network (H: home and shared drives 0196 Student folder)
use the Design Process to ensure that he/she follows directions, makes use of space and spell checks a written assignment
(Hint: to find the drawing tools go to View --> Toolbars ----> Drawing)
Task: Using Microsoft Word, create an acrostic poem using your name.
Acrostic poem hint: The words used in your poem should be adjectives that describe you and be appropriate to the grade level 7.
Each word should start with the letter from your name.
Design brief: (design specifications)
Include the following
· a title (you may use word art)
· your first and last name
· one graphic
You must fill the entire 8 x 11 “ page.
You will be marked on spelling, word use, and design.
Design process: Plan
Step 1
Create a word document and answer the following questions in complete sentences:
1. How will I make sure that my word use and spelling is accurate?
2. How will I find appropriate words for every letter of your first and last name?
3. How can I make an acrostic poem about me eye-catching and interesting to look at?
4. How will I make sure that I completed all aspects of the assignment accurately and completely?
Part II Design Process - Create
Saving: Create a folder in your home H: drive labeled 7IT projects.
Save your reflection as beforeacrostic your initials. Eg. beforeacrosticbs.doc
Your acrostic poem file should be saved using your initials and the word acrostic
e.g. Bart Simpson bsacrostic.doc – would be the documents name.
There is a simple rubric. You will also do a peer assessment (mark your own peers).

Designing a patio
Guiding question: How can I make my own unique and individualized design within a set of requirements or guidelines?
Area of interaction: Human Ingenuity
(Why and how do we create?)
Assignment: The owners of the Eaton’s Centre want to build a patio in front of the main entrance to attract more customers.
Your task: Design a tiled surface of the patio.
Design requirements:
You must include at least: 3 triangles with different areas
3 parallelograms with different areas
3 rectangles with different areas
3 trapezoids (that are NOT parallelograms)
with different areas
and the entire patterned area must be covered!!
Think about: What are the formulas that you need to draw your design?
Note: Each square of the patio has a side length of 10 cm. What is the scale? (ratio of design plan to actual measurement?) :
Over the weekend you must:
1.Do a rough copy plan.
2. Calculate the areas of each of your shapes.
3. Make a colour scheme plan. (What will the good copy coloured patio look like?)
4. Be prepared to explain your patio plan AND show how you know that you completed the
assignment as required.
5. If you like, complete the good copy on the weekend.

I.T. class reading
The Design Process

The design process is used in manufacturing. Usually a need is identified and the inventor/designer meets the need. Once the prototype is approved, the design is manufactured (built as per specifications).
THE PROBLEM – also think of as a “need” remember the Greatest Canadian Invention? What need did each of the inventors try to fill?
THE DESIGN BRIEF- think of it as the “solution” or meeting the need
PROBLEM: Blind people cannot play many of the indoor games available to sighted people.
· DESIGN BRIEF: Design a game of dominoes that can be played by blind people.
· PROBLEM: The handle of a pot becomes too hot to hold when the pot is heated.
· DESIGN BRIEF: Design a handle that remains cool when the pot is heated.
INVESTIGATION
FUNCTION: A functional object must solve the problem described previously. The basic question to ask is “How will I use this?”
APPEARANCE: How will the object look? The shape, color, and texture should make the object attractive.
MATERIALS: What materials are available to you? You should think about the cost of these materials. Are they affordable? Do they have the right physical properties, such as strength, rigidity, color, and durability?
CONSTRUCTION: Will it be hard to make? Consider what methods you will need to cut, shape, form, join, and finish the material.
SAFETY: The object you design must be safe to use. It should not cause accidents.
DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

MANUFACTURING
production of item. “The company is satisfied with the design. It knows that it is marketable (will sell). It must decide how many to make. Products may be mass-produced in low volume or high volume. Specialized medical equipment is produced in hundreds. Othe products, for example nuts and bolts, are produced in large volume. Millions may be made.
The task of making the product is divided into jobs. Each worker trains to do one job. As workers complete their special jobs, the product takes shape. Mass production saves time. Since workers train to do a particular job, each becomes skilled in that job. Also, automatic equipment does such things as:
· Cut and shape materials
· Weld parts together
· Spray on final finishes
Think of “How do they make that?” videos.
The process must be recorded checked and rechecked so that the manufacturing is reproducible.
Draw a diagram to help you remember the Design process.
