Designing a patio

Guiding question:
How can I make my own unique and individualized design within a set of requirements or guidelines?

Area of interaction: Human Ingenuity

(Why and how do we create?)

Assignment: The owners of the Eaton’s Centre want to build a patio in front of the main entrance to attract more customers.

Your task: Design a tiled surface of the patio.

Design requirements:

You must include at least: 3 triangles with different areas

3 parallelograms with different areas

3 rectangles with different areas

3 trapezoids (that are NOT parallelograms)

with different areas

and the entire patterned area must be covered!!

Think about: What are the formulas that you need to draw your design?

Note: Each square of the patio has a side length of 10 cm.

What is the scale? (ratio of design plan to actual measurement?)

:

Over the weekend you must:

1.Do a rough copy plan.

2. Calculate the areas of each of your shapes.

3. Make a colour scheme plan. (What will the good copy coloured patio look like?)

4. Be prepared to explain your patio plan AND show how you know that you completed the

assignment as required.

5. If you like, complete the good copy on the weekend.

Assigned: Thursday, Nov. 26, 2007

Rough copy due: Monday, Dec. 3, 2007

Good copy due: Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007
