Survey (step-by-step) 7 I.T.

How to write a survey.

Notes:

1. Decide what information you want to gather from the survey.

Eg. You want to spend 10,000 and you want to know if students/staff at the school would be interested

in HOW you want to spend the money.

2. Keep the survey as short as possible, asking only those questions that will provide the information you need.

Eg. Don’t ask about garbage when you want to know about people’s opinions on gym equipment.

My blog is: http://classofmissreinsalu.blogspot.com

To get onto tel at home go to:

Note: You should be working on this over the next three days.

n this case, close-ended questions are better than open-ended.

You want to be able to tally the answers AND then graph your results later.

Closed questions can be:

A ratings scale like:

Example (circle one) We need more gym equipment at school.

Strongly agree agree neutral/no opinion disagree strongly disagree

Are better than…

strongly agree strongly disagree

(You want to get and compile information that is easier to graph later.)

Another type of closed question can be a simple.

e.g.

We need more gym equipment.

Yes No Maybe

Or give choices

If we bought new equipment, we should spend it on.

a) balls (soccer, volleyball) b) jerseys c) lacrosse d)other

If other, what ideas do you have? (Please list a few.)

* Note this is an open question but good for providing evidence when

you do your presentation later. "Some people thought we should get

more equipment for things such as: ....)

When you get back your surveys, you tally the results and graph them.

The graphs will help give proof to why YOUR ideas are best.

  1. Decide on your area to spend the money.

  2. Think of questions to ask on your survey.

  3. Design a survey (individual)

  4. Meet with your group to share your surveys.

  5. Decide on what part(s) will go on your ONE group survey.

  6. Do a good copy of the survey, save it and e-mail it to Miss Reinsalu.

(Use your tel: valia.reinsalu@tel.tdsb.on.ca)
