Terminology for Angles and Measurement
Acute Angle: An acute angle measures less that 90° and can look something like these (angles between the grey rays):
Right Angle: A right angle measures exactly 90° and will look something like this:
Obtuse Angle : An obtuse angle measures more than 90° but less than 180°
Straight Angle: A straight angle is 180°
Reflex Angle: A reflex angle is more than 180° but less than 360° and will look something like this:
Pairs of Angles: Complementary Angles
Two angles adding up to 90° are called complementary angles.

Supplementary Angles
Two angles adding up to 180° are called supplementary angles.

If you know the angle of ABD, you can easily determine what the
DBC is by subtracting
ABD from 180!
Types of triangles: All interior angles add up to 180 degrees
Equilateral - all side lengths the same
Isosceles – two side lengths the same
Scalene – no side lengths the same
right angle – one 90 degree angle (right angle)
Types of quadrilaterals: All interior angles add up to 360 degrees
Square – four right angles, all side lengths the same
Rhombus - two acute, two obtuse angles, all side lengths the same
Rectangle – four right angles, two sets of parallel side, two sets of side lengths the same
Parallelogram – two acute, two obtuse angles, two sets of parallel sides
, and two sets of side lengths the same
Trapezoid – one set of parallel sides only, combination of four different angles
Your goals:
Art: Create an abstract artwork, attempting to combine colors and other elements harmoniously.
Math: Identifies properties of angles and polygons, constructs and measure angles and polygons using compass, protractor, straight-edge.
Math: Measures and draws acute, obtuse and right angles to nearest given degree
Elements of design
Materials required: 8 ½ x 11, protractor, rulers, pencil, pencil crayons
Your artwork must include at least two of each: acute, obtuse, reflex and right angles.
You must include at least one of each type of triangle: right angle, equilateral, isosceles, scalene triangles.
You must include at least four of each type of quadrilateral: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, and trapezoid.
Also include: one incidence of a pair of complimentary angles and one incidence of a supplementary angles.
Along with your artwork, submit a written page describing where one can find the angles and appropriate shapes within your drawing. Eg. The tree trunk at the top right hand corner is an isosceles triangle. Or if you have an abstract picture, create a grid and describe the quadrant x, y where your shape/angle is. Eg. A, 4 (like a map).
