Examining and comparing holiday songs

Frosty
the Snowman

Frosty the Snowman

Was a
jolly happy soul

With a corncob pipe and a button nose

And
two eyes made out of coal

Frosty the Snowman

Is a
fairytale they say

He was made of snow

But the children
know

How he came to life one day

There must
have been some magic

In that old silk hat they found

For
when they placed it on his head

He began to dance
around

Frosty the Snowman

Was alive as he could
be

And the children say

He could laugh and
play

Just the same as you and me

Frosty the
Snowman

Knew the sun was hot that day

So he said let's
run

And we'll have some fun

Now before I melt
away

Down to the village

With a broomstick in
his hand

Running here and there all around the square

Saying
catch me if you can

He led them down the streets of
town

Right to the traffic cop

And he only paused a
moment when

He heard him holler stop

Frosty the
Snowman

Had to hurry on his way

But he waved
goodbye

Saying don't you cry

I'll be back again
some day

Thumpety thump thump

Thumpety thump
thump

Look at Frosty go

Thumpety thump thump

Thumpety
thump thump

Over the hills of snow

Rudolph
the red-nosed reindeer

You know
Dasher and Dancer
And Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid
And
Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer
of all?

Rudolph
the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever
saw it
You would even say it glows
All of the other
reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor
Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games

Then
one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say,
"Rudolph with
your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then
all the reindeer loved him
And they shouted out with
glee,
"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in
history!"

Winter
Wonderland

Sleigh
bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is
glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight.
Walking
in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to
stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go
along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can
build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown

He'll
say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do
the job
When you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,
As
we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that
we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow
we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll
have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kids knock
him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your
nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo*
way,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

* note: people of the North are now referred to as Inuit NOT Eskimo (Eskimo is considered an inappropriate reference to the First Nations in the northern part of Canada.)

Do
they know it’s Christmas?

recorded
on November 25, 1986

It's Christmastime
There's no need to
be afraid
At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish
shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of
joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmastime

But
say a prayer

Pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it's
hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your
window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water
flowing is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that
ring there are the clanging
chimes of doom
Well tonight thank
God it's them instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa
this Christmastime
The greatest gift they'll get this year is
life
(Oooh) Where nothing ever grows
No rain nor rivers flow
Do
they know it's Christmastime at all?

(Here's to you) raise a
glass for everyone
(Here's to them) underneath that burning sun
Do
they know it's Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed
the world

Feed the world

Let them know it's
Christmastime again

Feed the world
Let them know it's
Christmastime again

repeat then fade

Midge Ure)

Christmas
In Hollis

by
Run D.M.C.

album:
Together Forever: Greatest Hits 1983-1991 (1991),

Run:

It
was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark

When
I seen a man chilling with his dog in the park

I
approached very slowly with my heart full of fear

Looked
at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer

But
then I was illin because the man had a beard

And
a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared

So
I turned my head a second and the man had gone

But
he left his driver's wallet smack dead on the lawn

I
picket the wallet up then I took a pause

Took
out the license and it cold said "Santa Claus"

A
million dollars in it, cold hundreds of G's

Enough
to buy a boat and matching car with ease

But
I'd never steal from Santa, cause that ain't right

So
I'm going home to mail it back to him that night

But
when I got home I bugged, cause under the tree

Was
a letter from Santa and all the dough was for me

:

It's
Christmas time in Hollis Queens

Mom's
cooking chicken and collard greens

Rice
and stuffing, macaroni and cheese

And
Santa put gifts under Christmas trees

Decorate
the house with lights at night

Snow's
on the ground, snow white so bright

In
the fireplace is the yule log

Beneath
the mistle toe as we drink egg nog

The
rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's

But
each and every year we bust Chrsitmas carrols

(Christmas
melodies)

Run-D.M.C.
:

Rhymes
so loud and proud you hear it

It's
Christmas time and we got the spirit

Jack
Frost chillin, the orchas out?

And
that's what Christmas is all about

The
time is now, the place is here

And
the whole wide world is filled with cheer

D.M.C.
:

My
name's D.M.C. with the mic in my hand

And
I'm chilling and coolin just like a snowman

So
open your eyes, lend us an ear

We
want to say

Run-D.M.C.
:

Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year!
