What we’ve discussed/Notes

French Colonization

  • since Samuel Champlain 1604 (Port Royal), 1607 Quebec

Acadia 1603

- part of present day Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (also Prince Edward Island) and parts of Quebec – eastern colony of France

Port Royal (1605)

Louisburg

New France 1608

- area along the St. Lawrence River, which is now known as Canada

  • Quebec, Montreal, Three Rivers (Trois Rivieres)

French friends with many Native people including Algonquians

Filles de Roi – daughters of the king – a way King Louis XIV got women to go to the new colony

British (English) friends with Iroquois

English established Hudson’s Bay Company for fur trade

New France 1663 – 1760

Seigneurial system, habitants and seigneurs ran the seigneuries (developing the land, strips of land perpendicular to the river banks, farming)

Governor general, bishop and intendant had power in New France

Acadia – lost to the British at the beginning of the 1700s

British unsure of loyalty of Acadians

Acadians (French origin) would not pledge the OATH OF ALLEGIANCE (loyalty to British king) resulted in expulsion of Acadians from the area

See notes on why you think Acadians were asked to leave

Quebec and New France lost and under British control in 1759

British commander James Wolfe (2 January 1727 – 13 September 1759)

French commander Louis-Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon, Marquis de Saint-Veran

( February 28 , 1712 – September 14 , 1759 )

Also known as the Seven Years War – 1756 – 1763

Look at notebook for advantages and disadvantages for winning the war

Finally think of the points of view for those left in New France (French and British) as well as the British 13 Colonies once Britain took control of New France for good.
