Welcome to another school year (3S list)

Welcome to another school year.

This is our class "public" blog. It's a place where I, or one of the students, will be updating announcements and homework on a daily basis as much as possible. (I also strongly encourage students to use their daily planner to write down their assignments as well.)

I often place links and documents related to what we are studying as separate blog posts too. Please encourage your child to check here often. I also encourage you the parent/guardian to check occasionally. This was we can all work together to ensure effective communication of what is happening in class.

We don't use full names on the blog to ensure internet safety.

This blog also has a comments function that anyone from our class (or parent/guardian) can post to as an anonymous blogger. If you have any cool links, would like more clarification on a post or assignment date please just add a comment.

As administrator for the blog I have approval rights so any comments made are not immediately posted.

Please refer to the 3S list I have created for "strongly suggested items for success"
as I have limited resources.

3S (or things that every student should have)

- calculator (Simple calculator is fine but should include the square root key)
- core binder (A place to put math, language arts and history/geography notebooks in one place. I often also give reference sheets that are handy to store in the binder as well.)
- self-contained pencil sharpener (Our room can often get dusty and it is better that we don't add pencil shavings to the mix until the end of the day.)
- protractor set (Can be purchased from the dollar store - has protractor, ruler and compass at least)
- French-English dictionary (Also can be purchased from the dollar store. Even though I don't teach our class French I have seen how having one's own dictionary can help a student.)
- additional drawing materials (I have pencil crayons and markers that can be used in class. Students usually need something to use at home.)

Again, the item list (and the next one) is a suggestion by me, as a grade 7 teacher, to ensure the greatest amount of success for a student. Too often in grade 7 students who don't have these items are forced to waste valuable time in class, or miss out on completing work and assignments on time because they DON'T have their own or someone to share with.

The final item is: A data storage device (removable Flash drive or something similar).
Students will be given personal e-mails (from our school board) with personalized user ID and password that they may access from home from an board-approved and monitored web site.

Not everyone has internet access at home and using a removable drive is a way to store information and final copies of written work (from home or public computer at the library to school and back again).

Last year, students in my class with drives:
- saved paper by just sending me their file (or saving it to our school's network for me to read)
- quickly edited and refined work in class by using our classroom computer without having to download and/or find their file
- were less likely to lose work
- were more likely to meet deadlines (or be early)

That's a lot for one post. I ask your support in encouraging your child to refer to the blog whenever he or she does not seem to have homework. This is grade 7 and there is always at least something small to do.

That reminds me....

As part of reading I require a Reading Log. Students can read ANY TEXT in ANY LANGUAGE for at least 20 minutes each night. Reading could include schoolwork, magazine, article on the internet etc. And that is every night (including weekends and holidays).

Students are asked each night to write down:
Title, genre, and use an adjective to describe what they read (eg. exciting, thrilling, boring, informative, confusing) in a Reading Log.

I would like the Parent/Guardian to look over and sign the log sometime in the weekend. Students are to bring the log book in every Monday so I can see it. Monday is the ONLY day I need to see the log. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Thanks again for reading,

Miss R

By the way, I cannot always get to the phone if/when you call. If possible, can you sent a contact e-mail with your child as another means of communication??

Thanks
