We watched "How do they make it?" after DPA this morning. This is the second half of the video shown to students. Our next language unit deals with procedural writing. How do they make it is a t.v. show that shows how important the scientific method is.
If engineers, chefs, scientists, and other people who make this - produce items from natural resources - don't write down specific steps and specific amounts and order things can not be duplicated. We watched about how toothpaste, couscous and rafts are made.
We looked at the front page of the Toronto Star today. "Plastic bags targeted" article http://www.thestar.com/News/article/211921
other great articles: http://www.thestar.com/environment
We discussed using recylable bags and critically looked at the article, important information and the use of photographs.
Students also looked a photographer Chris Jordan's work http://www.chrisjordan.com/
who shows statistics of American waste as art. Instead of numbers he represents items thrown out like plastic bags, cell phones, SUV's bought in his artwork.
Why is the story on the front page? (give three reasons)
Do you think this is an effective front page photo? Why or why not?
Sketch a picture of a photo you would use.
Highlight the main idea of the news story Hint: Inverse pyramid of news writing - where is the important information?
Name two interesting FACTS from the article eg. use numbers and ideas
Do you think there should be a charge for plastic bags? Why of why not? (write a complete paragraph).
There is one Math page - name and label the transformations. Be specific. Eg. 90 degree rotation clockwise (right).
Travel brochure due: Friday.
