homework for the long weekend April 5

Happy Easter (for those of you who celebrate).

Homework for this weekend includes:

L.A./Geography - complete readings and question sheets on:
Rivers/Oceans (completed for Thursday)
Deserts/Pollution due Tuesday

math: Gulliver's travels: complete Student Activities 1-4
Activities 1 & 2 should be completed.

Do activity 3 tonight and tomorrow.
Do activity 4 Sunday and Monday.
Remember concepts cover include calculating the perimeter and area of: triangles, rectangles and trapezoids. There are no hidden/new concepts. APPLY your knowledge. Read all the hints on the sheets.

Note: for the Student Activity 4 "Write a report" use the persuasive essay style.

opening paragraph
topic sentence (your opinion)
next three sentences (general reasons for your opinion, examples use facts, numbers, calculations you have made)
concluding sentence (to summarize)

In an essay you would start with the above paragraph THEN take EACH of your general points and write a separate paragraph for each - expanding and making more details reasons, examples and calculations to prove your point).

For a review on persuasive writing here's a great (and simple) organizer I found reason and explanation Try to keep this in mind (or create your own).

aim for level 4:
  • is clear, logical, and addresses the needs of the audience
  • has a strong, clear topic sentence stating the writer's opinion
  • has 3 or more supporting details with elaborations.
  • includes a concluding statement that restates the author's point of view
  • has few, if any errors in spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation
  • uses some variety and complexity of words and/or sentences
